Edward Edward is the star of the movie. He is very lone and shy, doesn't speak much, but when he does, his lines are precious and kind. He has been taught manners by his father, the inventor, before his death. A very obvious thing about Edward is that there is nothing impure about him. Everything about Edward is kind, good, and pure. He obviously falls in love with Kim, Peg's daughter. His talents include cutting hedges, hair, and ice.
The Inventor Also known as Edward's father, the Inventor is of course the man who invented Edward. Perhaps mad, perhaps not, the inventor spoke few words in the movie, but had a great character. He was happy, you could almost always see him smiling. His goal was to be able to make a robot have a heart, a heart of a cookie, almost. He found joy in his creations, including a cookie machine and of course, Edward. He wanted Edward to be a good person, so he balanced teaching Edward humor, happiness, and etiquette.
Peg Boggs Peg is a very kind Avon lady who doesn't seem to fit in as well with the rest of the surburbian residents, however she fits in well enough. She is the lady who brought Edward home to live with her because she couldn't stand to leave him up there all alone. A very consious thing about Peg is that she doesn't judge. When she saw that Edward's hands were scissors, she didn't think that they were weapons, that they could hurt her, or that they were wrong. She simply wondered why he had them, and what she could do to help him.
Bill Boggs Bill is Peg's husband. He is, as the actor playing him, Alan Arkin, said, he is a barbeque-y kind of guy. He enjoys bowling, fishing, sports, and being the family man. He thinks that money is the ultimate importancy in society and life, and productivity is near the top as well. He pushes Edward to make something of himself.
Kim Boggs Peg and Bill's teenage daughter, a senior in highschool and a cheerleader, Kim is pretty normal. She has an All-American boyfriend, regular friends, and her reaction to Edward is nothing short of shock. She is confused when she meets him, scared at first, and upset at her mother for bringing Edward home. She seems pretty shallow. However, she finally befriends Edward, mostly because she would defend him from her boyfriend (how ironic!) and that friendship becomes love after a series of events. She ends up caring for Edward so much that she tries to kill her boyfriend Jim when he tries to hurt Edward. Tries to kill Jim with Edward's hands, nonetheless.
Kevin Boggs Kevin is a normal kid. He tries to fit in with his family and peers.. He brought Edward in for Show-and-Tell, obviously to impress his classmates, and then later in the movie when Edward is considered a monster, seems to want to have nothing to do with the rumors and feelings that everyone else has towards him. He doesn't have any manners, and takes advantage of Edward by making him Show-and-Tell. But he seems decent enough, just immature.
Jim Jim is Kim's hateful boyfriend. He comes from a rich family, or at least his dad is rich, but he doesn't get to experiance wealth too much because his father is a cheap jerk, from what they talk about him. He hates Edward, probably mostly from jealousy and the fact that Edward is different, and even tries to kill Edward in the end of the movie. Kim finally sees what a moster Jim is, luckily.
Joyce Joyce is the neighborhood flirt. She has no real grasp of what love is, just the watered-down delusion of what she thinks love is, mainly false emotions based on shallowness. She wants Edward for herself, mainly because he is the object of all of the women's eyes, and also because he's just so dang cute! She seduces him, in which he rejects her, and she gets very upset. Upset enough to start a rumor that Edward tried to rape her. Nice lady, huh?
